With the threat of a CAT4 hurricane, September’s meeting was smaller than usual. But we still had some great conversation, saw some stunning magic, and had a fantastic night!
We discussed nominating a Lecture Coordinator to keep a steady flow of quality lecturers coming to our corner of Florida. We also talked about a Holiday performance for our hosts, the VFW. We talked about a mix of table-side magic and a 30-minute stand-up show. This way all members can play to their strengths and put on the best performance possible.
A suggestion was made to use CashApp, or another online banking option, for our club funds. The advantage being availability and no fees or minimum balance. As a club that has a wildly varying balances, this could be very helpful.
I’d like to hear your opinions on both of these subjects. This is your club, and we want to do what is best for everyone.
After the discussions, we got down to the magic. The theme was “Your Go-To Effect”. The trick you do when someone says, “You’re a magician? Show me something!”
Jay started things off with a single ungimmicked finger ring and a very magical, choreographed flurry of vanishes, appearances, jumping from finger to finger, and from hand to hand!
Jim began with what looked like the Hofzinser 4-Ace Trick. But the twist ending where the merely NAMED selection ended up printed across the back of the cards fooled and shocked everyone!
Up next was Tommy “Aces” Matera with his always entertaining Card To Mouth. Tom had some great pointers for anyone wanting to do this effect; borrow the deck, and give the card away at the end as a souvenir! Haha!
Frank’s go-to effect fooled the heck out of the group! A selected card, fairly inserted into anywhere in the deck, appeared at the precise position randomly chosen by the spectator! No crazy controls! No forcing of the card or the final position! And immediately repeatable! I think I’ve used up my daily quota of exclamation points.
Dan showed off the effect he uses to WOW the customers at Tin City Magic. Part challenge, part magic, and all amazing! I don’t want to give away any details. You’ll just have to stop in the shop and TRY to win this challenge!
Next up Johan crushed us with his mad card skills! Despite the extremely fair handling, and constantly reinforcing which cards the spectator was holding, cards jumped switched and changed into completely different cards while in Dan’s white-knuckle grip!
Ben broke up the card theme with his go-to effect; a very clean Coins Across involving multiple spectators. To quote Paul Harris, ‘no chocolate coins or heavy fudge-o moves’. I’m not entirely sure what Paul was talking about, but I can confirm that no fudge was harmed during the performance of this coin trick.
Thank you to all our super performers. See you next month!
